Subaru IIHS Ratings

Maple Hill Auto Group is proud to sell ten of the fifteen IIHS+ top safety picks of 2017. Of those fifteen, four of them are Subarus. The four models awarded IIHS+ top safety pick status are the Subaru Outback, Legacy, Impreza, and the WRX.

IIHS ratings are the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s safest ranked cars on the market for that year. The IIHS was developed in 1959 with the goal to reduce the number of vehicle crashes, and reduce injury and property damage in crashes that do occur. In order to qualify for the IIHS rating, the car must protect passengers from front, side rear, and roll over crashes. Each model is put under multiple crash tests that are constantly being upgraded and added to. Each test performed on the vehicle is then ranked either poor, marginal, average, or good. The car must also offer front crash prevention systems and state of the art headlights to further prevent accidents.

IIHS+ awards are given out to fewer models due to higher standards for rankings and further tests. For example, the 2017 IIHS+award required a new test this year: the passenger side small overlap front crash test which measures how well front seat passengers would be protected in a head on crash. This is in hopes that more companies will aspire for equal protection to the driver and the front passenger in the future which has been severely lacking.

Of the Subarus, only one model, the BRZ, doesn’t qualify for either the IIHS or the IIHS+ safety picks. Other than that, every Subaru model qualifies for one of these categories. Here at Maple Hill Auto, we always want to make sure you and your family are protected, which is why we pride ourselves on selling the safest cars on the market.
