Commitment to Community

Here at Maple Hill Auto, one of our defining principles is commitment to community. We believe an accurate measure of our success is how we give back to West Michigan, and that’s why we are proud to contribute both volunteer time and financial support to many of our region’s charities, non-profits and organizations. Our employees and our customers live and work side-by-side in Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Portage and surrounding towns, and we are all invested in building a safe and prosperous region.

The inspiration to support our community comes from the top of our company.  Maple Hill Auto’s owner/GM Jim VandenBerg is a West Michigan native who attended Hope College in nearby Holland, and has raised his family here in Kalamazoo.  Beginning when he purchased his first dealership in 1995, VandenBerg says working with local organizations has been a top priority. “Giving back to the community in which we work, live and worship was part of our mission statement, and it still holds true today.”  He added: “This is a place that is an instrument that allows us to help people and help Kalamazoo and Western Michigan.”

At Maple Hill Auto, we are particularly proud to support organizations that have directly impacted our employees lives, including Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes, Arc Community Advocates, Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, and SPCA of Southwest Michigan.

Along with local charities, we work with a wide variety schools, arts organizations and youth sports, in an effort to foster a brighter future for area children. Our largest effort comes in our support of youth baseball, softball, and t-ball.  We proudly lend our support to area Little Leagues like Mattawan, Westwood, West Portage, South Portage and others.  We also provide support to Mattawan/Hackett Swim, South West Michigan High School Hockey League, school robotics clubs and Western Michigan University.

Knowing that community celebrations are a highlight for many in the community, we take pride in helping some of West Michigan’s most beloved events keep going strong, such as the Kalamazoo Holiday Parade and Kalamazoo's New Year's Fest.  The holiday parade is particularly important to Jim.  He recalls that, in 1999, the parade was in dire need of a support and so Maple Hill Auto stepped up as the main sponsor. “I grew up with that parade right here in Kalamazoo and I wanted that to continue on,” he says.

Maple Hill Auto encourages our loyal customers to suggest ways we can support their passions.  This inspired long-time customers, who at one time purchased matching Subaru Outbacks just one day apart, to share their passion for mountain biking.  They suggested that we support the local biking community through bike races and the support of a local bike trail. We hopped right on and the Maple Hill Trail was created and is now open for riders to enjoy.

The work of Maple Hill Auto reflects the values of Subaru’s “Love Promise” initiative. Over the last 20 years, Subaru says it has donated more than $120 million and its employees have contributed more than 40,000 volunteer hours to non-profits and charities.

If you have an idea for an event or group in need of support, please contact us. We always welcome ideas from our customers and our neighbors!
