A Journey Like No Other- The Perfect Road Trip

Everyone know Michigan’s best tourists are Michiganders themselves. Perhaps we’re a bit narcissistic but who could blame us? Michigan is beautiful and the perfect state for a road trip, just make sure you have all the necessities before you hit the road.

1. A tune up for your vehicle

The worst thing that can happen on a road trip is a service light turning on or an annoying rattle that can’t be fixed by turning up the stereo. At Maple Hill, we will happily perform a free multi-point inspection that covers 42 areas of possible concern. That’s 42 items crossed off your road trip checklist in minutes! If there is an issue, we’ll work with you to find the best solution and get you on the road in no time.

2. The perfect route

Road trips are about the journey, not the destination. Owner Jim VandenBerg and his family take a long weekend every summer in Mackinac and, through trial and error, have found the best and most comprehensive tour of Michigan’s west coast. Mapped below are the VandenBerg’s favorite places to stop along the way, for the beaches, the beauty and the ice cream! (Holland, Ludington, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Traverse City, Charlevoix and Mackinaw City.)

3.  A good book

Whether it’s hardcover, paperback, electronic or an audiobook, reading is a great way to pass the time on a road trip. Some of our favorite titles include…

The Secret History by Donna Tartt (Fiction)

The Truth About Keeping Secrets by Savannah Brown (Young Adult Fiction)

Everything Matters! By Ron Currie Jr. (Fiction)

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls (non-fiction, autobiographical)

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith (Fiction, historical)

4. Yummy food

How much energy do you burn driving? If race car drivers get sweaty then it must be something right- like walking instead of running? Well, better be safe than sorry and make sure to carbo-load to keep up your strength. I don’t know what the best snacks are for the ride, but I do know what the worst are- licorice and beef jerky. Please be kind to your fellow passengers and leave the nauseating smelling food out of the car. Or, better yet, stop for some food along the way and save everyone from the headache that would follow. Some of the best restaurants along the route are...

Windmill Restaurant (Holland- breakfast)

House of Flavors (Ludington- the most amazing ice cream in Michigan)

Harvest (Traverse City- local ingredients, Asian and Mexican street style)

Bridge Street Tap Room (Charlevoix- craft brews, great views)

Nona Lisa’s Italian Restaurant (Mackinaw City- giant portions of good italian food)

5. Enough space to put everything

There is so much to do in Michigan and never enough time to do it in, but don’t let not enough space be your excuse. Whether it’s biking, camping, or boating, make sure your car is equipped with everything you need to have a great time. Maple Hill is happy to install hitches and bike racks on any vehicle.

6. Have fun!

In the end, it doesn’t matter where you go, or how far you travel, but who you go with. With a good attitude, life is a journey, and at Maple Hill we strive to make it a journey like no other.
